Introduction to the author
Feng ZHAO, born in Haining, Zhejiang, in August 1961. Obtained the first degree in Engineering in the Zhejiang Institute of Silk Textile (present day Zhejiang Engineering Institute) in Hangzhou in February 1982, and the Master degree in the history of textiles in the same institute in 1984. Promoted to Professor in 1996. Obtained the Doctor degree in history of textile technology at the China Textile University (present day East China University) in Shanghai in 1997. Has taught at the Zhejiang Institute of Silk Textile. Edited the academic magazine Sichou shi yanjiu (Studies in history of textiles). Currently working as deputy director at the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou. Member of the International Council of Museum and the Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens.

Possesses 18 years of experience in the study of art history and technology of archaeological textiles. Publications include Sichou yishu shi (A History of Silk Art), Tangdai sichou yu sichou zhilu (Silk and the Silk Road in the Tang dynasty), and over 100 research articles. Invited to authenticate by museums, archaeological institutes and private collections, both in China and overseas. Has participated in international conferences and study programmes since 1993. Awarded the Sylvan and Pamela Coleman Fellowship by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1997-1998, and the Veronika Gervers Memorial Fellowship by the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto in 1999-2000.
